The Federal
Government of Nigeria through the National Agency for the Prohibition of
Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has commended the Nigeria-based DEVATOP Centre
for African Development for its numerous achievements, impactful intervention in
combating human trafficking and human rights abuses through its foremost APP “TALKAM”
Director
General of NAPTIP, Binta Adamu Bello, OON, gave the commendation in Abuja at a joined
Press Conference organized to celebrate the global award and honour bestowed on
TALKAM Human Rights App by the United Nations.
Represented
by the Assistant Director, Training and Manpower Development, Mr. Festus Gav,
the NAPTIP boss pointed out that within the period under review, DEVATOP had
documented and referred several cases to the Agency, provided skills and
training for survivors in Sokoto, Delta, and Enugu, and provided psychosocial counseling.
“It supported
the production of short films to create awareness of TIP, sextortion, and Organ
Harvesting and the training of 45 Officers of the Agency on digital cases
management and rapid response using the TALKAM APP among others.
“This event
is significant as it seeks to celebrate the United Nations Award to DEVATOP for
developing the TALKAM App and its achievements for Nigeria,” the
Director General said.
In her speech,
the Secretary of the Board of DEVATOP, Cynthia Ene Ogbe lauded the impact of
DEVATOP on issues of human trafficking in Nigeria saying that the App is more
than just an app but a global civic tech tool empowering victims citizens, and
human rights advocates to take action.
She said, “This
event serves as a platform to showcase the joint efforts of DEVATOP and NAPTIP
in combating child trafficking, human trafficking, gender-based violence, and
other human rights abuses. Through the innovative TALKAM Human Rights
App, we are transforming how human rights abuses are reported, addressed, and
prevented.
The
international recognition by the United Nations Alliance of Civilization
highlights the innovative strides made by TALKAM and reinforces our commitment
to expanding its reach across Nigeria”, the Board Secretary stated.
Speaking also,
the Founder/ Executive Director, DEVATOP Centre for Africa Development, Joseph
Osuigwe, who chronicled the successful journey of the organization, and the
development of the APP told guests at the Conference that “DEVATOP Centre for
Africa Development is a tech-driven human rights Organization with the mission
to work with local, national and global partners in promoting human rights and
upholding justice in Africa.
According to
him, TALKAM App is a digital case management system that empowers Government
Agencies and human rights organizations across Africa to seamlessly receive,
manage, and respond to reported cases. NAPTIP and 30 human rights organizations
are now using the TALKAM digital case management system.
“Currently,
from 2019 to this year 2024, 361 cases have been reported on the TALKAM app and
83 of these cases have been resolved in partnership with NAPTIP and human rights
organizations.
With the
support of USAID and Palladium, we set up community structures in Sokoto, Delta,
and Enugu known as Community Champions who are using technology to monitor and
report human trafficking and gender-based violence”, he said.
The app which
has an easy navigational structure and user friendly can be downloaded via www.talkam.app.
The event was
witnessed by dignitaries, representatives of donor Agencies members of the
Civil Society Organizations. and other partners and donors.
